Air vent valves: an excellent thermodynamic solution

Any air present in the system must be evacuated using vent valves which are suitably sized

Heating systems or, more generally, systems that exchange heat with the environment via the circulation of fluids with a high convective heat transfer coefficient, are subject to the presence of quantities of air inside them. Air is a compressible fluid with a low coefficient of convective heat transfer that does not allow an adequate heat transfer with the external environment. Moreover, if the system is maintained under pressure, the action of the air may also have a negative effect on the structural strength of the pipe, causing corrosion along its internal sides. For this reason, air vent valves with horizontal and vertical outlets have been introduced. They comprise of a loosened plastic cap.
There is a float inside the air vent valves that determines the functioning of the component: if there is air present in the circuit, the low level of water in the vent valve will cause the float to descend, allowing air to be let out and re-establishing the normal operating conditions. There is also a ring seal that maintains the circuit under pressure and prevents leaks of any type. Correct maintenance of air vent valves is highly important: operators should be aware that any impurities inside the circuit can reach the outlet valve and compromise its use.
